Varberg – where forest meets the sea
Just 1.5 miles from the waterfront in Varberg lies Derome, a family-owned company with deep roots in the Swedish forest and its traditions. As Sweden's largest private timber industry group, Derome is not only a driving force in the Swedish timber industry but has also benefited from the strategic location provided by Hallands Hamnar in Varberg.
Export plays a central role in Derome's operations, and over the years, close cooperation with Hallands Hamnar has contributed to the company's success. "Having our sawmills and production facilities located near Varberg greatly facilitates our export activities," explains Linda Andersson, CEO of Derome Timber. The collaboration with Hallands Hamnar has over time led to the development of tailored transport solutions, which in turn has significantly streamlined the export process. As a result, a large portion of the exports now flows smoothly through Hallands Hamnar.
Varberg's proximity to key transport routes like the E6 and other major highways makes the port a crucial hub for Swedish timber export. Derome's success in international markets, such as in England and the USA, highlights the importance of this location. "The geographic position of Hallands Hamnar enhances our export opportunities, with regular departures and scheduled services to key destinations," emphasizes Linda. The collaboration not only strengthens the region's export capacity but also solidifies Varberg as a central point in the national timber export network. However, it is not just Varberg's location that matters.
The geographical position of Hallands Hamnar enhances our export opportunities.
What truly distinguishes the collaboration is the close dialogue and the ease of working together. "We have a close dialogue, and it’s easy to coordinate and find solutions in various situations. Hallands Hamnar is solution-focused and willing to adapt to our needs, whether it’s handling extra volumes or loading or unloading ships on short notice." says Linda.
With plans to increase annual export volumes, currently around 200,000 cubic meters, through the port in Varberg, the future of the collaboration between Derome and Hallands Hamnar looks bright. The upcoming inauguration of the New Farehamnen, with its modern facilities and optimized logistics flows, plays a crucial role in this vision. "For us, the port in Varberg is crucial. That’s where we have our Woodtec facility, which provides significant logistical advantages for both us and our customers," concludes Linda.
