A straight path from the sawmill to the port

In the heart of Northern Sweden, where the slow-growing forests stretch towards the sky, we find Norra Timber, a company that processes this green gold and delivers it around the world. Backing them are their owners, the 27,000 members of the forestry association Norra Skog, who have sustainably managed the lands of Norrland for many generations. With strong roots in the northern forests and close cooperation with Hallands Hamnar in Varberg, Norra Timber creates a sustainable bridge between local production and the global market.

When discussing the Swedish timber industry, it’s impossible not to mention the rich forests of Norrland. There, among thick trunks and silence, grows the timber that is sought after worldwide for its quality and sustainability. Norra Timber, deeply rooted in this tradition, has become a bridge between local production and the global market. However, no bridge is stronger than its supporting pillars, and for Norra Timber, one such pillar is Hallands Hamnar in Varberg. "As a port in Sweden, Varberg stands out not only for its expertise in forest products and timber but also for its capacity to handle large bulk flows. "For us, this is important, especially since we are targeting markets like Northern Ireland, where the direct route from Varberg gives us unbeatable efficiency," says Daniel Färdeman, Sales Manager at Norra Timber.

When a collaboration is good, it becomes successful. Continuously seeking improvements is the key to success.

The collaboration with Hallands Hamnar has spanned over a decade, during which a successful and strong partnership has been established, characterized by mutual understanding. "It's about more than just logistics," explains Färdeman. "We continuously discuss how we can improve and streamline our processes. Whether it concerns the train solutions, the planed products, or the handling in the port, the goal is always to find ways to do things better for both us and the environment."

A concrete example of this collaboration is the train transport of timber from the sawmill in Hissmofors. With a well-oiled process, 10 to 15 wagons are loaded at the sawmill and then transported directly to Varberg and straight into the port. There, they wait for the next ship to arrive—a process that is both efficient and environmentally friendly.

”Being able to seamlessly transport directly from the sawmill to the port in Varberg is a very smooth solution.”, says Färdeman. ”When a collaboration is strong, it becomes successful. Continuously seeking improvements is the key to success." he concludes. This commitment to develop and improve has made the collaboration between Norra Timber and Hallands Hamnar successful. It is a journey that not only promotes Swedish exports but also paves the way for a more sustainable global trade.
