Being a port worker with us at Hallands Hamnar is a versatile and developing profession. The tasks vary, and no day is the same as the other. One day you might assist in monitoring traffic in the area, and the next, you operate a crane. Therefore, it is important that you have a broad skill set in multiple areas and enjoy working in a team.

Port work involves transporting goods through the port. This can be from train or truck to a ship or vice versa. Sometimes a stopover in a warehouse or storage area is also required. Your task is to safely and efficiently move the cargo from one place to another using specially designed vehicles and machinery.

Required training

Port workers have a developing role. The more knowledge and skill you have, the broader your field of work becomes. The tasks are often complex and require a significant amount of knowledge and skills. It is important that you have training in operating machines, forklifts, and cranes. Another important aspect is that you can and enjoy working in a team. As a lot happens with us, ongoing training is provided.

Crane operator

As a crane operator, you operate and control cranes and lifting devices. You'll load, assemble, unload and move different types of heavy materials and goods. The work differs depending on which of our cranes you operate. It is important that you have coordination skills, a focus on safety and enjoy working in a team. As a crane operator, you work independently and are in contact with colleagues via radio communication and signalling. Colleagues on the ground switch the load on and off and give instructions on where to move it. Crane operator work may be combined with other tasks in these activities.

Machine operator

As a machine operator in the port, your main task is to use different types of machines and equipment to perform various tasks within the port area. You will operate machinery such as loaders, forklifts or other specialised vehicles depending on the specific needs and requirements of loading and unloading. As a machine operator, you will ensure that loading and unloading is carried out efficiently and safely. In order to avoid accidents or injuries, you monitor safety aspects. Your work involves interaction with load couplers, who are tasked with accurately connecting and disconnecting containers from transport vehicles, as well as with stuffers, who are responsible for strategically loading containers with various goods. Together with administrative staff, you will ensure that all processes from arrival to departure are handled professionally, with a focus on safety and time management. In addition to this, you may also be required to carry out maintenance work on the machines and report any technical problems to the responsible staff. Compliance with safety and environmental regulations and guidelines is an integral part of your daily work.

Forklift driver

As a forklift driver, you are responsible for smoothly loading, unloading and moving goods where needed. For example, between different modes of transport and warehouses or from warehouses to production areas. You'll receive goods as they arrive and make sure they're in the right place at the right time. We have several types of forklifts to choose from. Which one you use will vary depending on where you work and the type of goods being handled. You may also be involved in packaging and keeping the warehouse tidy. Service and maintenance of the forklift is also carried out. Handling shipping documents and orders may be part of the job.

As a signalman, you act as the crane operator's extended arm and help ensure the safe operation of the crane. You give clear instructions to ship crews, pilots and other port workers to coordinate safe manoeuvres. Through manual signals or electronic systems, you guide ships on arrival and departure. And to manage the cargo process. It's also your job to make sure that all parties involved understand and follow the necessary directives. Safety is paramount in your work. You monitor and ensure compliance with protocols and regulations. And in case of emergencies, you act quickly and can coordinate a possible evacuation. Another task is to maintain and monitor signalling equipment and technical systems used to control cargo handling.

Traffic controller

As a port traffic controller, your main task is to monitor vehicles and traffic in the port area. You are the one who ensures that all transports are carried out in an efficient and safe manner - to facilitate the handling of goods and optimise the logistics flow. To prevent accidents and incidents, you are vigilant and ensure compliance with safety regulations and guidelines. In addition, your work includes assisting and guiding drivers and other staff in the port area.

Load coupler

As a load handler with us, your main task is to manage the loading and unloading of cargo from ships. You will connect and disconnect cargo using cranes and other lifting equipment to ensure the process is carried out in a safe and efficient manner. Through attention to detail and knowledge of different loading techniques, you will ensure that loading is carried out correctly and that the cargo is secured for transport. You will work in close co-operation with other port staff, crane operators and ship crews to ensure efficient and coordinated handling of loading. Good communication and coordination is an important part of the job - to ensure that loading and unloading is done according to schedules and requirements.

Stuffer

As a port stuffer, your main task is to load and unload containers from ships and place them in designated locations. Your work involves organising and securing cargo for transport or storage, efficiently and safely. As containers often contain different types of cargo, it is important that you follow the specific requirements and handling instructions for each type of cargo. And to ensure the smooth and efficient handling of containers, you will liaise with other port staff.
