Meet our Head of Labour Hans
Hi Hans! What do you do at Hallands Hamnar and what are your working days like?
I've been working in Halmstad for nine years - first eight years as a production manager and last year as a site manager. My working days are varied and my main task is to make sure that everything runs smoothly - that we keep the promises we make to our customers and that the work flows smoothly, both with staff and machines. I have strong support from three production managers who manage the day-to-day work and two planners who organise the tasks and make sure the schedule is kept. No two days are the same and that's what makes working in the harbour so much fun.
What is the best thing about Ports of Halland?
I like the spirit of progress that we have here. That we always want to move forward and strive to be better. Every year we set new goals that we work hard to achieve. Going forward, it's about increasing productivity in our ports, while developing environmentally. The next step is to electrify our fleet.
Do you have something extra exciting coming up?
Yes, absolutely! Check out the Ocean Harbour in Halmstad, where we are working hard to be able to receive larger vessels. This means a completely new quay and increased draught to strengthen our competitiveness. This investment means that our customers can gather all their goods with us, instead of dividing up the loads. And then we have the new Farehamnen in Varberg, which is just as exciting, where we are opening up the possibility of handling even larger volumes of forest products.
What are the development opportunities as an employee?
There are great opportunities here. As soon as you start working with us, we'll get you started with quayside training, so you get off to a good start and understand how the port and harbour work. Over time, you'll have the chance to try more and learn new things - from driving a forklift to working with large cranes. If you're ambitious, there's always something new to learn.
What is the biggest challenge so far?
Wow, that's a tricky question. There's so much to choose from. One of the most memorable projects was when we lifted a locomotive weighing 200 tonnes ashore. We used two cranes for the job. Not only was it a technically difficult challenge, it also showed how good we are at handling large and complex loads.
Finally, what would you say to someone who is thinking about applying for a job at Hallands Hamnar?
Take the chance and apply! I can offer you a job that is free and varied, where you can use both your body and your mind. One day you might be sitting in a crane 16 metres above the ground, and the next day you might be standing on the quayside slinging timber. If you appreciate a job with variety and the opportunity to constantly learn new things, then Port of Halland is the right place for you.
I like the spirit of progress that we have here. That we always want to move forward and strive to be better.
