Oceanhamnen inaugurated – the first step in Hallands Hamnar’s multi-billion investment program

Oceanhamnen in Halmstad has now been inaugurated. The port expansion marks the first phase of Hallands Hamnar’s major SEK 1.4 billion infrastructure investment, aimed at establishing Halmstad as one of Sweden’s leading logistics hubs by 2035.

“This is our largest investment to date. With new quays, expanded terminal areas and modern infrastructure, we are strengthening our position as a key port operator while creating the conditions for increased volumes and a broader range of cargo types. The inauguration of Oceanhamnen marks an important first step in our infrastructure investment,” says Carl-Henrik Hägg, CEO of Hallands Hamnar.

Construction of what is now Oceanhamnen began in November 2023, with the first groundbreaking ceremony. The port section was completed in December 2025.

Engaging speeches and valuable networking opportunities

During the inauguration, guests were invited to take part in both a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a series of speeches. The 130 attendees heard, among others, Municipal Executive Board Chairman Stefan Pålsson speak about the port’s importance to the municipality, Monika Przedpelska Öström, Managing Director of the Swedish Ports Association, discuss the port’s role in Swedish industry and trade, and County Administrative Director Claes Lindgren highlight what the Port of Halmstad means for the region and Sweden’s civil preparedness.

They were then joined by Hallands Hamnar CEO Carl-Henrik Hägg and Magnus Thorén from Stena Metal International, one of the port’s largest customers, to officially inaugurate Oceanhamnen with a joint ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Strengthening the region’s competitiveness

Oceanhamnen forms part of the municipality’s and the port’s extensive infrastructure development in and around the Port of Halmstad, which will continue through to 2035. Investments totaling SEK 1.4 billion are aimed at improving transport efficiency to and from the port and strengthening its competitiveness through additional quays, expanded terminal areas and modern infrastructure. The project also includes direct motorway connections, new railway tracks and an electrified rail yard adjacent to the quayside, capable of handling 750-metre-long freight trains.

“The investments we are making in the port are being carried out in close collaboration with industry needs, with the aim of strengthening both business competitiveness and the region’s overall position. Halmstad is strategically located close to continental Europe and offers excellent accessibility for Swedish imports and exports. With an expanded port operation, we expect increased interest from companies looking to establish themselves here. In addition, the port will play an important role as a strategic preparedness port,” says Stefan Pålsson, Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board in Halmstad.

The expansion project is partially financed by the European Union, which has contributed funding for 30 percent of the newly developed land area.
