New Farehamnen - Europe's most modern forestry port

‘The new Farehamnen harbour in Varberg is an important event not only for Halland, but for the entire Swedish forest industry’. This quote comes from Viveka Beckeman, CEO of the Swedish Forest Industries Federation, in connection with her visit to the inauguration of the new Fareham on 9 September 2024.

A new port is ready

A new harbour is inaugurated perhaps once every hundred years, so Halland's Ports wanted to take the opportunity to show off the new harbour. In connection with the inauguration, customers, owners, employees and partners met to talk about future opportunities and challenges.

- ‘Through this investment, we are creating the conditions to strengthen our competitiveness and offer even better services to the port's customers. Our vision is clear - we will continue to create long-term value for the forest industry, our employees and the region,’ says Johan Sigurdsson (M), Chairman of the Board of Halland Ports.

It was about ten years ago that planning began for the urban transformation of Varberg. So it was a satisfied board of directors for Hallands Hamnar who, together with 170 guests, watched as a parade of machines symbolically drove from the old to the new quay in Varberg.

New technologies offer new opportunities

The new Farehamnen is an investment of just over half a billion kronor and creates the conditions for running an efficient port for many years to come. All investments are aimed at creating a more modern, efficient and sustainable port. The new Farehamnen has, among other things, railway tracks near the quay and large storage areas. There are also plans to introduce digitised storage systems and the port is prepared to offer shore power and an extensive charging infrastructure for vehicles and machinery.

Farehamnen is already a major player in the forestry industry, with more than a third of Swedish exports of sawn softwood to the US and UK passing through the port of Varberg.

- ‘With our new technical conditions in Farehamnen, we have strengthened our position as Sweden's leading forestry port,’ says Carl-Henrik Hägg, CEO of Ports of Halland. ‘Now we are aiming even higher and want to become Europe's most modern forestry port.

Agust Thordarson, logistikansvarig Vida Woods AB

This interview was conducted with Agust Thordarson, Logistics Manager at Vida Woods AB, in connection with the inauguration of Farehamnen on 9 September.

What is your experience of the new Farehamnen?

I'm impressed by the investment here in Varberg. It shows great ambition and faith in the future.

What did you take away from the guests who spoke on stage during the opening day?

What a wonderful commitment the project group has had. It's clear that they want the new Farehamnen to be great!

Farehamnen aims to be Europe's most modern forestry port. What do you think about that?

‘Halland's Ports have now laid the foundations for this with investment in space, continued work on digitalisation and electrification, and the surrounding infrastructure.

You at Vida export sawn timber to large parts of the world. What does Port of Halland's investment in digitalisation and electrification mean?

‘The Port of Halland is absolutely right. More machines will be powered by electricity in the future. I also look forward to when we have a digitised logistics chain, then the risk of errors will be minimised and work in the port will become more efficient.
