Port of Grenaa and Ports of Halland in joint cooperation - Kattegat Port Alliance

The Port of Grenaa and the Port of Halland have long been friendly ports through Stena Line, whose ferry service links the ports of Grenaa and Halmstad. Now they are taking the next step and deepening their cooperation through the Kattegat Port Alliance - a collaboration that will create growth and sustainable logistics solutions for customers in the key segments of offshore wind power, the energy sector and existing freight flows.

The background

The background to the co-operation is that the ports see great opportunities in sharing experiences and developing joint projects in sustainability, innovation and logistics solutions. By formalising the cooperation, both parties can benefit from each other's strengths and create added value for their customers.

- This partnership is an important strategic element in our continued growth and development and we see great potential and good synergies for our customers in strengthening and developing the cooperation across Kattegat. Ports of Halland and Port of Grenaa have had a very good, positive and close cooperation for many years and this partnership is a natural and innovative development of our cooperation, says Henrik Carstensen, CEO of Port of Grenaa.

- ‘This collaboration means that we can offer our customers more efficient and sustainable solutions by combining our resources and competences. Together with the Port of Grenaa, we are creating new opportunities to optimise cargo flows, improve warehousing and facilitate the management of complex projects,’ says Carl-Henrik Hägg, CEO of Ports of Halland.

Focus on key segments

It is in the segments of offshore wind power, the energy sector and existing freight flows that the collaboration will primarily focus on.

- We choose to focus on these segments initially as we see good opportunities to jointly create growth and strengthen the offer to customers here. The Port of Grenaa has a strong position in these segments and offers valuable expertise and resources that complement Port of Halland's own strengths,’ Carl-Henrik Hägg continues.

In offshore wind power, the collaboration creates benefits throughout the establishment process. Transport and handling of wind power components are streamlined when both ports' areas, resources and expertise can be utilised while providing higher cost efficiency.

- We see this as a natural step in attracting more wind power projects to the region and creating stronger logistics flows for our customers,’ continues Henrik Carstensen.

- ‘But it is also important to highlight the broad cooperation around the existing cargo flows between the ports where we see a potential in optimising warehousing and logistics solutions and creating environmental benefits,’ concludes Henrik Carstensen.

Offshore wind

Kattegat Port Alliance has a unique position in offshore wind power with an offer that extends from the establishment of wind turbines to ongoing operations in the form of supply port operations. By combining the space, resources and expertise of both ports, we can offer logistics solutions that optimise and facilitate the entire establishment process - from delivery, warehousing to installation. For the ongoing operation of the wind turbine, we offer customised areas for supply port operations with quay access, the possibility of establishing offices, warehouses and workshops. There are currently around 20 planned wind power projects in Kattegat.

Energy

Ports of Halland and the Port of Grenaa offer logistics services to the energy sector aimed at supporting the transition to green energy and contributing to climate goals. The Port of Grenaa is investing in becoming a platform for testing and producing new forms of energy such as hydrogen and biogas, as well as supplying green energy to heavy traffic such as lorries and ships. The Port of Halland has recently participated in a BIO CCS feasibility study (Port of Halland participates in HEM's feasibility study on carbon capture - Port of Halland) and has the ambition to act as a logistics hub for Bio-CCS (Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage). With its strategic location and modern infrastructure, Halmstad is an ideal place to handle and transport biogenic carbon dioxide. The ports are now jointly exploring the market for PtX (Power-to-X) projects to provide logistics and storage solutions.

Cargo Mobility

Developing innovative mobility solutions to improve transport efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The Port of Grenaa and the Port of Halland have identified existing goods flows where collaboration between the ports provides the conditions for more innovative mobility solutions when warehousing and transport are optimised with the potential to reduce environmental impact. These include freight flows with recycling fractions, steel, container traffic and car imports. This creates added value to existing flows as well as creating a stronger offer to new ones.
